Construction Industry:
Emerging Technologies & Digital Transformation

An immersive 5-day experience for executives

Available Online and In Person

What Is The Program About?

The construction industry is experiencing profound change as companies come more and more to rely upon digital technologies to carry out their work. Following a period in which construction was among the sectors with the least investment in technology, the industry is now seeing digital disruption in a wide range of areas including project management, human resources, data analytics and staff training.

Our immersion program will educate you in all of these trends, connect you with the companies pioneering groundbreaking solutions and inspire you to turn your own company into a leading innovator capable of long-term growth.

Construction startup innovation map

What Will I Learn?

Our immersion program is made up of sessions with leading companies operating at the forefront of major trends in the construction space such as:

Mobile

Mobile is a highly active space within construction industry digital transformation. PlanGrid, one startup operating in this area, builds a smartphone app made for collaboration on plans, photos, markups and other types of construction documents. Fieldwire, meanwhile seeks to optimize collaboration between foremen, project managers and others working on-site. Buildup is another startup offering efficiency gains for workers out in the field and executives in the C-suite.

Big Data Analytics and Project Management

The digitization of the construction industry is perhaps most clearly seen in the proliferation of cloud-based data analytics and project management platforms tailored to the sector’s needs. Katerra, BuildingConnected, Procore Technologies and Inertia Systems are all startups working in this area. They seek to empower users with data at each stage of a construction project and unify what is often a fragmented process.

The Sharing and Gig Economy

A number of startups are leveraging digital technologies to build marketplaces and associated tools for the construction industry. Among these companies are Fibo, a mobile, cloud-based work tracking app for construction teams, and Worktoday, which helps connect construction workers to employment opportunities. BuildZoom, meanwhile, is a marketplace matching architects and contractors to potential customers.

Virtual and Augmented Reality

A big growth area in recent years, Virtual reality (VR) and Augmented reality (AR) are fast becoming essential technologies to the construction industry. Use cases include training sessions, as illustrated by Scope AR, and 3D photography and virtual walkthroughs from startups such as Cupix and HoloBuilder.

Day 1

The Digital Disruption of Construction

How is the construction sector changing under the influence of digital technologies and where is this journey taking us? Why is the digital revolution happening now and what are the forces driving its expansion? These are the questions we answer on day 1 of our immersion program on The Future of Construction. We explain how startups have capitalized on industry trends, new technologies and the ready availability of venture funding to create companies addressing construction industry pain points and inefficiencies. We visit companies such as PlanGrid, a cloud-based construction document collaboration platform, Vernox, a streamlined production planning system for construction projects, and TraceAir, a cloud platform with smart analytics for construction quality and cost control. Other possible participating companies: Katerra, Mighty Buildings, PlanGrid, HoloBuilder, Buildingconnected

Day 2

Exploring Market Niches

The journey continues on day two with an exploration of the limits of the disruption to the construction sector as they exist today. How many areas are seeing radical change? What is the nature of this change and how fast is it moving? We answer these questions through visits to startups operating in a wide range of niches. Potential meetings include: HoloBuilder, makers of software for construction teams to document construction projects with 360° image technology; Rhumbix, a provider of construction field supervision via a mobile platform; and Flux, a team building collaborative design software for the building design and construction industries. Other possible participating companies: Built Robotics, BuildZoom, EcoDomus, Fieldwire, Indus.ai

Day 3

Emerging Technologies for Construction

Day three of the immersion program is dedicated to the technologies fueling the disruption of the construction sector. We hear from experts in artificial intelligence, robotics, mobile, internet of things, and virtual and augmented reality to learn what these technologies can currently do and what they will offer in the future. We visit companies such as Scope AR, Skycatch, and Cooper Gray Robotics to see how they use emerging technologies to create competitive advantages and provide innovative, market-disrupting products and services.   Other possible participating companies: Roofr, Helix, Agora, StructionSite, Getable, Cupix

Day 4

Corporate Innovation for Construction

Having seen and heard how digital is disrupting the construction industry on days 1 to 3, on day 4 of our immersion program we challenge attendees to turn words into action. Participatory workshops with leading Silicon Valley experts on design thinking, design sprints, venture capital and open innovation provide executives with the blueprints and frameworks they need to deliver innovation within their own organization. We analyze how legacy construction companies are adapting their businesses to digital and survey the industry’s success in collaborating with the startup ecosystem. We visit companies such as Autodesk  and Brick and Mortar Ventures, a specialist venture capital firm for the construction industry. Other potential meetings include the big tech companies such as Amazon, Google, Apple and Oracle to see what role they could play in the construction industry and learn how they maintain cultures of constant innovation. Other possible participating companies: SenseHawk, Handle, Upcodes, Modumate, Skur, IoTrek

Day 5

The Future of Construction

What’s next for the digital disruption of construction? Day 5 brings the program to a close with its sights firmly set on the future. We learn about trends still in their infancy and meet the companies seeking to capitalize on those trends. Possible visits include: Construction Automation, a 3D printing and robotics specialist; ALICE Technologies, makers of AI-powered project management software for construction; and DroneBase, a data provider capturing information from the sky using drones. Other possible participating companies: Klinche, X3 Builders, Modlar, Vernox Labs, Slateplan, Extracker
